Sofie Stolk is a filmmaker originally from the Netherlands who studied at London Film Academy, graduating with the rest of the team behind C for Criminal. She has previously directed a short film noir, The Deal, about deception and crime, similar to the goings-on in C for Criminal. Her passion lies within beautiful cinematography, being the director of photography for Mummy, the Hand, and I, and the award-winning thriller Most People. Sofie has a background in photography, theatre, music, playwriting and more visual art forms from which she draws her limitless inspiration. She is our Director, our Co-Writer, and our Editor.
“I have always been intrigued by the mystery of life and how it is that accidents can happen to some, and if left untold, others are left guessing what truly happened. I wanted to make a film that conveyed this feeling.
”A child is always learning from the individuals around her. In C for Criminal, this learning curve has taught Delora, the daughter of Inspector Killian, that she can use her father’s detective instinct to her own advantage. In the film, the audience experiences Killian’s journey trying to figure out what might have happened in his house, while he was away at work. Meanwhile, the viewer also decides for themselves what might have happened. As the film develops, bits of Delora’s point of view are shared.
“A specific challenge with my first film was interacting with the talented actors and actresses that worked on this film with me. Days and nights of research and asking fellow directors resulted in some good preparation, however a good discussion with the talent themselves resulted in a way of working that proved best for the shooting days ahead.
“This film and story transformed multiple times in the process of making it. It started out as a super short that I wrote for a school project. This version had more humour than anything else. When I decided I wanted to evolve this script, I involved a more invested script writer and we quickly built the few pages into a more serious and thriller-like story. Finally, the story grew into the wonderful short it now is, showing spirit and wit from both Delora and Inspector Killian.” - Sofie
