“To Be or Not Ton Be…Monologue Contest”
CONTEST 2020
#Identity and Culture
Consulate General of México in Los Ángeles

OBJECTIVE

To Be or Not To Be…Monologue contest, on Culture and Identity, seeks to help promote creativity, identify emerging talent, and provide a platform for actors and scriptwriters to present their skills and interact with other people with similar interests. The contest also aims to open a space for reflection and exchange of ideas about the identity and culture of the people in Los Angeles, a multiethnic and multicultural city, where about half of its inhabitants are of Hispanic descent.

The Consulate General of Mexico in Los Angeles, through the Mexican Center for Culture and Cinematic Arts (CCCM), invites the community of Los Angeles to write and perform a monologue, 3 (three minutes) maximum, where they can convey the positive aspects of their identity and culture, whatever they may be, and how they consider that these have enriched the communities where they live.

Examples are bilingualism, culinary richness, traditions and celebrations, entrepreneurship, hard work (notably during the pandemic), the value placed on the family and caring for the elderly, love for music and the arts, resilience and optimism, among others.

Participants can choose to tell stories of the challenges they´ve faced, successes, memories or growth, as well as existentialist reflections or indicate if they have developed an identity as immigrants or descendants of immigrants; how they call themselves or how they perceive the culture and identity of the people around them (Americans, Mexican-Americans, African-Americans, Asians, etc) ...
