CANNABIS SETS YOU FREE is a humorous documentary essay with its main narrative thread following the story of “particular” people around the world who have turned their lives into a battle for the legalization of cannabis. Some were prosecuted but all first came into contact with cannabis because of their need to cure themselves or others. But then it took over their lives, became their purpose, and pushed them on the path of their personal cannabis revolution. The main protagonist of the film is Janko Pirc, a tragicomical cannabis revolutionary from the ex-Yugoslav region, where private growers and manufacturers are still sentenced to prison for 1-10 years.

From a humorous distance, narrated by Frank Zappa look-alike, ex-Yugoslav rock philosopher RAMBO AMADEUS, the documentary also takes a look at the cannabis industry now being entered by politics, the pharmaceutical industry, and capital due to astronomical profits that lie ahead. Because of all this, the initial idyllic image of cannabis as the miracle plant fought for by various activists all around the world with their civil disobedience is pushed towards one of the most profitable industries of the future. (Pfizer already bet on medical cannabis with a $6.7 billion acquisition with the clinical-stage company Arena Pharmaceuticals in 2021)

At this very moment, the cannabis plant is simultaneously becoming a symbol of freedom of civil society vs. Big Pharma and at the same time, the trap of the world capital… Our goal is to stir up some kind of voice of reason, leading the viewers to a well-thought-out and wise relationship to the future use of cannabis for medicinal and recreational purposes.
