Button, button by Richard Matheson Film adaptation by Madison Cowan
Mrs. Lewis was going home to cook dinner for herself and her husband like any other day, when she looked down before unlocking the door she noticed a small package. She picked up the package and went inside to begin cooking, after she started the lamb chop, she opened the package. Inside this box was a button covered by a glass dome, underneath it read “Mr. Steward will call on you at 8:00P.M.” Later, she was finishing up a salad when the doorbell rang. 8:00 P.M. sharp. A small man stood in the doorway, he took his hat off and invited himself in while Mrs. Lewis was grabbing the button. In the living room, sitting in Norma’s chair, he pulls out an envelope with a key to the dome. Arthur asks what it does, and Mr. Steward’s reply sends shivers up his spine and curiosity up Norma’s. "If you push the button, somewhere in the world someone you don't know will die. In return for which you will receive a payment of $50,000." They ask him to leave and to keep the button, Arthur has no interest while Norma can’t hide hers. She calls Mr. Steward the next day for closure. However, when she gets home there the button is. They go back and forth over the next couple of days, when Norma mentions it for the last time Arthur leaves in a rage. She pushes the button, and the phone rings, it's Lennox Hill Hospital and her husband has been in a freak accident. The phone rings once more, this time Mr. Steward is on the other line, “You said I wouldn’t know the person that died!” Mrs. Lewis shrieked, in a cold tone he replies, “My dear lady, do you really think you knew your husband?”
