But Not Today
LOGLINE: A revered civil rights leader suffering from early onset dementia is visited by God, who asks him to talk Her out of “recalling” an obviously defective humanity.
SYNOPSIS: FRANK O’MALLEY is a revered civil rights leader who has been beaten down by his failures to save humanity from its own suicidal stupidity. His wife and daughter are killed in a car accident and He has a breakdown, during which he’s diagnosed with early onset dementia.
In total despair, Frank retires, incognito, to a small town to live out his life to the best of his ability.
One day, a beautiful woman named KALI appears to Frank, claiming to be God. She tells him that she has decided to “recall” Humanity as a defective species.
In despair and anger, Frank bitterly agrees that God should eliminate humans. Frank’s former lover and journalist MICHELLE and current lover JANINE try to convince Frank to ask God to give the world another chance. Frank reminds them that God killed his family and gave him dementia.
A day of sex, morality, religion, politics, and other forbidden dinner table topics, ends with Frank finally agreeing to try to talk Kali out of deleting humanity.
Kali agrees to let humanity live, for now, but only after Frank promises to resume his fight to save the world, even as his dementia deepens, he forgets more and more often where he is, who he is, the names of loved ones, and absent-mindedly snacks on tissue paper and napkins.
After Kali leaves, Frank is able to reach out to only one stranger in his attempt to resume saving the world, before falling even more deeply into his dementia, sitting in an outdoor café, a sobbing Janine at his side, whispering, “You will run like the wind and soar like an eagle.”
