Director Statement

Portrayals of diversity have enjoyed a heightened and long overdue exposure in the arts of late. Brothers In Arms is rooted as a dramatic entertainment to reflect the mosaic of our diverse world. Its story and themes examine how we can begin or belong to something and yet evolve into something else; this film presents the collision and impact of that process upon the people we care about most.

The narrative includes Italians, Latinos, Black Americans, other ethnic groups, and authority figures, combining and clashing towards mutually realized fates. Too many films with ethnic sensibilities and foreign characters often deliver one-dimensional or marginalized studies that only perpetuate stereotypes and prejudgments - many films about Italians for instance, are often reduced to a caricature of organized crime or mafia life in a manner that merely contrives drama and doesn’t represent the more realistic complications of a person or heritage. This film intends to find a deeper texture of these realities.

Brothers In Arms treads on greater themes intended to explore our differences, through disparate family members gone wrong, and separate social lines of authority. The story world serves to imbue awareness that those who operate on both sides of the law belong in the same world, despite operating by different codes. Police and criminal are helplessly tied to each other, and the constant pressure of surveillance and pursuit causes lines to blur.

An intended touchstone is the primary role family plays in a culture, and the complicated bonds and breaking points of common heritage. The concept of family is interpreted differently by each character, suggesting a varied subjective understanding and meaning of that concept, and the emotional weight attached to it. Brothers In Arms aims its lens higher to explore these complexities. Family in this film is not tied to conventional definitions or traditions; those mired in family conflict seek out what they need through their connecting forces in unique ways. And when family is broken, worlds collide with limitless emotion - relationships are burdened, loyalties are challenged, and fates are changed.

Who but brothers know such things.
