There are things in life that are pure. Things that unite a body of the uncommon. Things that inspire and achieve in doubt. Things that fulfill, surpass and bring purpose to what was lost. Things that rise with blinding momentum.
My life has been filled with trials and tribulations, as many have, but the art of a storyteller is unique to most. I come from a long line of raconteurs and have endured far reaching walks of life. From early brushes with the law, to living on my own through my teens, to semi pro hockey, and working for a Fortune 100 firm, my stories encapsulate the ebbs and flows of finite emotion.
I grew up on the fourth largest and third oldest farm in Illinois. Generations of farmers coursed through our family dating back before the Civil War. Stories of oil tanks exploding, lightning strikes, snapping turtle duels, an all-but-fatal bee attack, and accidentally eating an endangered fish, were tales of the terrain just from my lifetime. There is desperation, heartbreak, solitude and strife coupled into those years that yearn for light.
I moved away from home at the age of fourteen to play AAA hockey, climbing ranks and playing for NHL coaches along the way. After making it to semi pro I spiral fractured my scapula; with 13 broken bones I was no stranger to injury, but our team doctor said he’d seen anything like it before, comparing it to a car wreck at 90mph. I suffered a concussion, 3 broken ribs and a shoulder that was dislocated and splintered, all from a moment seemingly frozen in time.
After that I was forced to find life after hockey. I went to college, studied creative writing under Alex Shakar, a New York Times best-selling author, and intended on accepting his recommendation to Iowa Writers’ Workshop before learning I had thyroid cancer that fall. A newfound appreciation of life pushed an entirely new perception of the world around me. I started a family and slowed down, eventually overcome with that innate desire to do as my lineage had done so well before me – tell the stories that accent our journey. To invite a stranger to a time and place, disconnected from their current reality - that is a purity that few other forms of art enjoy.
Ultimately our paths are not all dissimilar, but our convection of the like is what defines us.
