Broken Sky

In the near-future post-apocalyptic wastelands of California, Aurora, the leader of a tribe of warrior witches, must battle an extremist religious deputy, and defy her own tribe's prophecy, on her quest to get an abortion. Meanwhile, her family of tenacious women works to build a future based on cooperation, community, and an affinity for nature. A human experience free of hierarchy, exploitation, and bodily repression sets the foundation for our heroine’s journey to find herself in a broken world.

Director Biography - Cara Fay, Sean Humphries

Cara Fay is co-creator of "Broken Sky", a short film proof of concept for a long-form narrative television series. Cara also plays the lead character, Aurora. With over 25 years of acting experience across NY, LA, and London, Cara has developed a deep appreciation of the complex art of filmmaking. By pivoting into more directing, writing, and producing, Cara has expanded her horizons with this, her second film endeavor. Her first short "4/20" won the Rising Star Award at the 2019 Colorado International Cannabis & Hemp Film Festival (CICHFF). Blending naturalism, fantasy, substance, and levity, Cara aims to continue making art with an impact, in an attempt to change the world for the better.

Director Statement

In ‘the land of the free’, women’s rights are consistently under attack. With our proof of concept, Broken Sky, we aim to explore a better path. In a near-future dystopia, old world traditions clash with new world progressivity as Aurora and her tribe of warrior women attempt to rebuild society upon a foundation of equality and harmony. Human nature, however, is complicated; fear, insecurity, and instability inspire villainy among those who crave power and control. They punch down, instead of lifting each other up. It is in the midst of this conflict that Aurora seeks an abortion, to the dismay of both her enemies and her friends. Broken Sky, as a full narrative television series, is a story of empowerment, autonomy, and a lot of soul-searching, but on a grander scale it is also an exploration of what it means to be human. It’s an emotional and authentic analysis of alternative ways of life, and the power of the paths we chose. Join us on a journey across apocalyptic america, as we illuminate the significance of choosing love over hate, thoughtfulness over instinct, and togetherness over polarization. Perhaps, through our examination, we can bring humanity one step closer to utopia, even underneath a broken sky.
