Finn Scully is a director, cinematographer, and editor based in Chicago, Illinois. Finn is currently a film major at Columbia College Chicago and is set to graduate in 2025. He has made several short films in high school and is continuing to do so in college. Finn gets ideas for his films from his experiences in high school, traveling and watching other films. One of his short films, Isolated was selected as a finalist of The New York Times's Coming of Age in 2020 contest about how the pandemic has effected students everywhere. The contest had more than 5,500 submissions and only 245 finalists. Finn loved learning about film in high school which he has carried into college. His dream is to become a director/cinematographer in Hollywood, where he will tell stories that are not often told.
I directed and wrote this film, Broken Dreams, because of how it relates to experiences I have had both in high school and now in college. In high school there was a girl I liked a lot and had hung out with a couple of times. I remember getting all these strange looks every time we would go out and I could never figure out why. Later I learned that the girl I had been hanging out with so much had a boyfriend. The main character in the film, Cy, has a similar experience and plans to talk to his friend, Bennett about what happened between him and Cy's girlfriend, Chloe. Cy is determined to figure out what is his past and future with Chloe. I felt like I had to make this film as a way for others who have gone through a similar experience to process their emotions and see themselves in Cy's character. My lead actor, Nate, did a great job about conveying the subtleties of a character who is experiencing something like this, which is why I have used him in other projects of mine. While shooting certain scenes I could feel myself thinking back to those very moments in high school.
