Director Statement

Brigitte is a queer, science-fiction adaptation of an experience my grandfather had while serving in the US Navy during the Vietnam war. My papa continually witnessed a light in the sky over the South China Sea with which he developed a spiritual-like connection. I made this film as an imagined cross-generational encounter between my future descendant and my late grandfather. I find the concept of light traveling through space fascinating. Witnessing the light of a star long after it has died reminds me of my relationship with family and ancestral lore. In October 2023, I hosted a print sale at Sarah Brook Gallery to raise funds for the film, selling gelatin silver prints I made while volunteering as a dark room monitor at the Irvine Fine Arts Center. The film's financing has primarily come from this print sale and a generous material donation from Kodak.
