ANNOUNCEMENT:
Submissions for our 2019 competition are now CLOSED!
If you would like to submit to next year's fest, by all means, please do! Send an email to briefs.erotic@eastbayexpress.com with "BRIEFS2020" in the subject line.

BRIEFS is the East Bay Express’ annual Erotic Short Film Competition showcasing works by amateur and professional filmmakers from around the world. In its 8th year, the one night screening will continue to explore the limits of erotic filmmaking in a liberating and entertaining format ideal for sex-positive film lovers of every gender and orientation.

Held at the iconic Grand Lake Theater in Oakland on Thursday, Feb. 21st, 2019, BRIEFS features a hosted screening by none other than Tourettes without Regrets founder Jamie Dewolf, and a non-hosted screening shortly after.

Films will be judged by all attendees, along with a handpicked group of special guests. A cash prize of $500 is awarded for the Judges Choice and $1000 for the Audience Favorite. Winning film teams will also walk away with bundles of sizzling goodies from local retailers. Last year's judges included: Feminist Pornographer, Author of Daddy: A Memoir, Sex Educator, and the Founder of Erotic Film School, Madison Young; Sex Worker, dirty-movie maker, sexual health educator MPH, founder of the 'Ask First' consent campaign, and all-around good time, Maxine Holloway; FTM transmale adult performer, nightlife personality, and public speaker based out of San Francisco, Viktor Belmont; Writer and producer of award-winning marriage 2.0, author of Better Than the Hand, longtime partner of Game Link, and founder of eLine, Magnus Sullivan; and, Coach, mentor, role model, co-founder and CEO of Leisure Life edible company, former COO of Magnolia Wellness, and co-founder of Supernova Women, Amber Senter.

An after party & awards ceremony will be held after the event at an Oakland venue to be announced soon. Attendees can most certainly expect controversial burlesque, wild interactive audience games, and jaw dropping dance performances creating an all-around crazy, fun event not intended for the light of heart!

  • Because I didn't attend, I cannot comment on any aspect of the festival event, but to leave a review I must give the festival an overall rating, so I give it a middle "3". However, I can comment on communication. My film 'Zebra' won Best Cinematography in 2017, but I was never notified; I learned of it about 2 weeks after the event, when someone not associated with the festival sent me a link to a tweet that listed the 2017 award winners. I emailed the festival asking about the award, but never received a response. Because this was their 6th year of operation, they should have already had clear procedures established for conducting pre- and post-festival communications with filmmakers. I still have no idea if the award was in actuality a physical item, a piece of paper, or a listing on a website.
