Brexit, Health and Me

The documentary follows the research by Prof. Hervey, Dr. Antova, Dr. Wood and Dr. Flear on the implications Brexit will have on the National Health Service (NHS). It explores the various misconceptions that were circulated amongst the general public in the lead-up to the EU Referendum, such as the '£350 million a week to be invested in the NHS' claim by Boris Johnson. The documentary captures how different sections of the UK’s population reacted to it. Moreover, it analyses how Brexit will impact medical supplies in the UK and the potential effects this would have on people’s wellbeing. It also discusses the implications on NHS staff after Brexit and the extent to which the limited access to the EU’s medical workforce will put a strain on health in the UK. Finally, it explores the power of emotions over facts in public debates.

'Brexit, Health and Me' is directed by Sabina Mckenzie Brown, presented by Aaron Roach Bridgeman and produced by Matteo Bergamini, founder of Shout Out UK.

Director Statement

As a woman of colour, one of the most frustrating obstacles I have faced in the course of my filmmaking career has been the subject of my work. In particular, I have faced pressure to produce films, videos and other creative work that focuses specifically on my B.A.M.E background. Whereas I recognise there is immense value in reflecting the voices of underserved communities, I also wanted to demonstrate that people of colour can easily make informative and meticulous films on topics such as Brexit and our NHS. Hence, I challenged myself to learn more about Brexit and its implications on our health system and in doing so, I believe I demonstrate that women of colour can direct successful documentaries on such topics.
