Breath Among the Breathing
Through his battle with lung cancer, choreographer Willie Hinton became keenly aware of his breath and how it fueled and inspired his dance, and how the rhythm of breath dictated the rhythm of his movement. In this piece, he reflects on how we rarely pause to breathe in our daily lives, but through community with others we can lay down the race, breathe deeply and be restored. Director Ruby Schweitzer sought to respect the motifs of Hinton's choreography through her filmmaking, and to illustrate the beauty of deep breath in contrast to phrases of fast-paced, frenetic movement. Additional choreography exists that can be performed live alongside a screening of "Breath Among the Breathing."
