The film records the growing pains of China’s globalized generation in the past decade. It also presents how they are rejected, then accepted, and finally grown in the cultural shock between China and the US. It is in this way that China’s current education has been reconsidered in the level of the system itself and families.

Director Biography - Tongdao Zhang, Ming Yu (Co-director)

Tongdao Zhang– Beijing Normal University director of Documentary research centre, professor of School of Art and Communication, Chairman of China Association of Higher Education Film Education Committee, Chairman of Chinese Documentary Development Fund, Visiting scholar of New York University and University of California, Los Angeles. Once served as jury of China Golden Eagle TV Art Festival, Sichuan TV Festival, Shanghai TV Festival, Guangzhou International Documentary Festival, Al Jazeera International Documentary Festival. Hosting more than 30 projects in national arts, education and broadcasting. Past works include: <Kids Kingdom>, <Born in 2000>, documentary series <Secrets of Growing Up>, <Once Upon a Time in Bussiere’s Garden>, was awarded in Al Jazeera International Documentary Festival, Sichuan TV Festival, Chinese American Film Festival.

Director Statement

This is a story about growth pain of a bunch of Chinese kids born in 2000, and also a fable of future China. I never thought the production would last for 12 years. It is the children’s life keeps me moving on; I am always curious about how time will shape those kids. They have already became a vibrant landscape in my life.
As the first documentary that records the “born in 2000” generation in China, <Born in 2000> shows the growing path of Chinese new generation under globalization, drawing a real picture of Chinese education. This documentary reveal the psychological war among the children, parents and teachers, which involve topics of personalities and education system, examination- oriented education and humane, study in China or study aboard, puberty and parent-child relationship, etc. And they are connected to every families’ topic of education. A bunch of lively details and dramatic stories are captured inside.
