In July of 2020, I was approached to pitch a concept for one of the tracks on Born I’s new album “In This Moment”. I was familiar with and a fan of Born I’s previous work, specifically the music video for “Blue”, which some dear friends of mine created back in 2016. I really resonate with personal storytelling in music and when I first heard “In This Moment” on the album’s tracklist, I latched on fully.
This song really caught me at a point in my life where I needed to hear its message. The actor, Josh Horton , had a similar reaction when I approached him early on to be a part of it. He not only acted in this but gave himself fully to the process and joined me as a story collaborator when I was writing these vignettes. Writing this film was a reprieve from feeling trapped in a cycle of worrying over things out of my control and repeatedly beating myself up for not doing enough to fix everything and everyone around me. In reality, I needed and need to work on taking care of myself. Making this film sparked a personal journey of meditation, mindfulness, and just simply being kinder to ME. I’m not perfect - never will be. I’ve repeatedly failed at all the actions listed in the former sentence but this journey has begun. If nothing else, when I revisit this piece, I will be reminded of what values I hold dear in this life.
The thing about deeply personal and honest work is that it tends to rub off on the open hearts who take it in. I know how true this song is to Born I. It feels to me like a testimony of turmoil transforming into clarity - and that’s what I wanted to at least try and convey. I’m honored that I was given the freedom to bring my own interpretation to it. I love that this film lives as a companion piece to this beautiful album and song. Much love and gratitude to the @bornimusic family and to my beloved collaborators who played in the mud and berries with me on this one.
