"Bonspiel" - A Curling Comedy for the Ages!
What the hell is that? Brooms? On ice? Are those people sweeping ice? This looks like housework. How is this a sport, let alone an Olympic sport?
That’s what ran through my mind the first time I saw curling on television during the Winter Olympics. The second thing that ran through my mind? "Dodgeball" meets "Legally Blonde," but with curling. Ladies’ amateur curling.
After a lot of research and a bit of curling, "Bonspiel" – which means curling tournament – was born. A hilarious, double fish-out-of-water, female sports comedy in which a privileged, Aspen housewife joins a Canadian curling team and sweeps her way to a new life after her scheming husband abandons her.
"Bonspiel" tells the story of Jen Sudcliffe as she tries to fit into her new husband’s rarefied, yet shallow way of life in Aspen, Colorado, without losing sight of her own dreams. Jen’s husband whisks her away on a first-anniversary trip, but their private jet makes an emergency landing in remote Kanadoon Kreek, Canada. Jen’s world implodes when her conniving husband’s crimes come to light and he flees, leaving Jen stranded and penniless. As Jen tries to find a way back to some semblance of a life, she grows close to the ladies of the north after she subs for an injured player and joins their curling team. Antics ensue as Jen adjusts to her new surroundings, a new sport, new friends, and maybe even a new romance. When the team heads to Aspen for a major tournament, Jen must gather the courage to reconcile her competing realities and decide her own fate.

I am a New York based screenwriter who was a Los Angeles based entertainment lawyer in my former life, and an amateur curler in my new one.
Curling is a fresh hook through which to present themes such as self-empowerment, identity, and redemption in a relatively untapped, yet timely subgenre, the female sports comedy – appealing to all types of sports fans, comedy fans, romantic comedy fans, and, of course, curling fans. Kegs, costumes, bagpipes, and punny team names provide an immersive glimpse into a curling's quirky subculture a la "Best in Show," a marked contrast to Aspen's over-the-top glitz and glamour.
Additionally, set in the present with no special effects, "Bonspiel" can be produced for a relatively low budget, subject mainly to casting. As a marketing bonus, Olympic curling is on the horizon!
