Wwenen
Mixed-Media Artist | Director | Creative Director
Wwenen is a mixed-media artist and director based in London, holding degrees in fashion and fine art. Their work delves into the social construction of familial relationships and sexuality within patriarchal East Asian societies, exploring the complexities of identity and self-expression.
Drawing inspiration from pop culture, Wwenen's creations often manifest as moving images, installations, and performances, influenced by the principles of situationism. In their artistic practice, they view materiality as a vital collaborator, respecting it as a unique ‘living body’ that contributes to the creative process.
Our film is called "Body Like Fine China," and it centers on "The evolution of Asian body image perceptions." Key themes include "body image," "self-perception," "fashion colonization," and "media." The media creates pressure by promoting an ideal body image on social networks, making individuals more susceptible to its influence. The beauty standards propagated by the media are overly narrow and unrealistic, a phenomenon that needs to be challenged. The film aims to generate a positive effect on people's self-perception of their body image, oppose fashion colonization, and seek practical solutions. It will portray diverse, healthy Asian body images within the unique context of Chinese culture, highlighting the prejudices they have faced and their proactive responses. By challenging media stereotypes, we hope to promote body self-recognition and mental health in a positive direction.
