Experiencing Interruptions?

BLUE

Logline

An indecisive doctoral student must help a precocious photographer unravel the mysteries of synaesthesia if either of them hope to escape the drudgery of a life without colour.

Synopsis

Melissa's world has been about making her parents proud of her. With her doctorate, and her parent's adulation, in the balance, she is running out of time. Frustrated by the lack of data needed to finish her dissertation, she stumbles upon a rare case of synaesthesia that just might hold the key to her research...and her future.

Andy is a free spirit, a photographer with a unique perspective. Her entire life has been a struggle to understand her synaesthesia, and the colours only she experiences.

Is the understanding of Andy's synaesthetic response to blue enough for Melissa to achieve her doctorate? And, will that give Andy the answers she has always been looking for?

Director Biography - Jason Hamilton

Jason Hamilton is a self-taught writer/director/producer originally from Southern Ontario who now lives in the beautiful Canadian Rockies. His passion for film began in his teenage years and was spurred on by his mother, Barbara , after she convinced his father, Rob, to buy him his first camera. His mother continually told him she wished she could help him make one of his 'movie ideas' a reality but never had the money – however, she encouraged him to keep writing, developing and making experimental videos, assuring him his dreams would come true.

Sadly, Barbara died suddenly in May of 2014, just as Jason was preparing to cast the lead rolls for BLUE. The film would eventually become a reality, but not without a lot of soul searching, sleepless nights and, of course, funding that Barbara had left for him to 'pursue those dreams'.

With BLUE complete, Jason is busy developing several new projects including a television pilot, a short psychological thriller as well as a feature film.

I think much of human history, human writing, has tried to define or express the unexpressable. The way we feel is so individual and yet there are these undertones of commonality, that, to a great extent, allow us to form societies and relate to one another. These societies, these human groups, unwittingly gestate a nuanced system of rules – unspoken but best followed – some things go together like peaches and cream and some don't. But what if something were to disrupt this; not purposefully but symptomatically? How would you know to try something
different if you didn't know it was something to be tried at all?

My life has always been a struggle between what I 'know' I'm suppose to do i.e. go to school, get a job, buy a house, and what I want to do i.e. make a film, take a picture, write a poem. It's a struggle, I believe, a lot of people relate to and so, in creating these characters, we see juxtaposition, we see the breaking down of barriers between what we are told is best for us and what we truly believe will lead to happiness. It's the not knowing, it's the step into the dark, it's the chance to become yourself not just something someone said you should be. In a lot of ways, it's about having the courage to tell the world that different is more beautiful than normal could ever be.
