Blue Butterfly

My short film Blue Butterfly follows both my mother and me from our first moments at the hospital to my younger childhood years. This piece is dedicated to my mother and shares a story about the impact her loss has had on me.
I am a poetry writer and my works tend to discuss childhood and family relationships. I
choose to incorporate one of my written pieces into my film to create a visual, abstract piece including home videos and animation. Taking the poetry, I crafted visuals to reflect the process of loss. Both my mother and I love animation so I knew I also wanted to incorporate that element. I choose to explore paper animation as I believe it enhances the theme of childhood and reflects the crafts my mother and I used to make, many including scissors and paper. The paper animation is used to include these moments I remember with my mother as well as create a visual of the butterfly instead of having it remain a metaphor.
