Director Statement

After graduating from university I went back and revisited the body of work I had produced there. During this process, one common theme stood out to me. All the art I had produced was relatively sad. It was bleak, depressing, and nihilistic. Maybe this was simply a reflection of whatever I was personally battling at the time or just simply that, as people say, drama is far easier than comedy. One thing was for certain however, and that was that I did not want to repeat this pattern anymore. I wanted to make a movie that could simply be summarised as ‘fun’.

These are the movies that we love. These are the films that people flock to the theatre to see. And this is something that I saw was clearly lacking from the short film world. So I set out with that single word in mind when approaching the script for ‘blocked’.

And that was that. Let’s have the most fun with this film that we possibly could. How many perilous situations could I put the hero through in 20 minutes? Situations that could then later be looked back on and laughed about. “I can’t believe we made our way out of that one!” A phrase that I’ve said myself and I would believe most others have laughed about with close friends, many a time. A phrase that we should probably all be saying more often.

The world in its current state doesn’t need more bleak added into the mix. Let’s just have some fun.
