BLACK SITES
Resulting from a lengthy investigation, Black Sites approaches secret centers of detention and torture for political opponents of the current Syrian regime. Through a visual and audio cutting, the temporality of the city hangs for the benefit of an interior time in which the only perceptible sounds bring back to the imaginative consciousness of the observer the torture methods used. Between disembodied landscapes and densely populated urban spaces, the immediate proximity of these shadow zones acts as a constant reminder of an impalpable, but reel, horror in which the coercive potential of the city reaches its climax.

Specialized in artistic representation of war and coercive phenomena of the Arab-Muslim worlds, Mathilde pursued theoretical studies in history and art history and is currently at the École des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris. In continuity of her reflexive approach, her plastic production intends to question the conditions of visibility in violent situations, bringing out a critical look at war and images.
