Birth of the Butterflies

Birth of the Butterflies is a psychological/experimental drama that revolves around Cat, who struggles to deal with the loss of someone close to her/them, finding comfort and solace solely in her/their partner "LB" due to their heavily dependent connection to them. Inspired by an Australian Aboriginal story detailing the birth of butterflies, the film explores Cat's journey through grief, focusing on their relationship with LB in particular and exposing the ugly sides of grief that the media often paints over.

Director Statement

Having been an avid reader and writer from childhood, starting with stories detailing Peach and Daisy’s adventures, she’s had a passion for stories for most of her life. She made her first “film” aged 11 using her laptop camera and Windows Live Movie Maker and since then, with the assistance of Harry Potter behind the scenes videos, she’s been determined to break her way into the industry.
Katie first gained experience at 16 with the BFI as camera operator/1st AC for Sink and producer for Look What the Cat Dragged In. She’s done some freelance work on the side including wedding videography, designing album artwork, and advertising for local businesses. Solo she’s created two interactive media pieces as well as an experimental film; she’s written two powerful spoken-word videos exploring empowerment and sexual assault; she’s also directed an immersive experience and two short films, The Pill and now Birth of the Butterflies. Most of her art covers personal experiences, designed with the goal to convey important messages and create impact.
