Director Biography - Tyrel Haight

Tyrel Haight grew up in a small rural Canadian town. It wasn’t until he moved to Victoria BC that he discovered a passion for film and television. He began by attending an evening acting class and instantly found his calling. From there he was invited to attend the full-time program at the Victoria Academy of Dramatic Arts. At the school in one of the classes during an exercise the students had to write their own scenes to perform. Tyrel instantly took an interest in the writing aspect. After graduation he acted in a few productions and music videos in Victoria and eventually moved to Vancouver BC. There he got an agent and began his acting career performing in short films, commercials, and television shows. While working he met, a now long-time friend, a producer from LA. After discussing the premise for two feature films, Tyrel was tasked with his first writing project. He delivered his scripts “Divided” and “Chalky” and was paid for his work.
Tyrel then felt the need for something selfless and looked for an adventure. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 2017. While in the military, in his spare time he continued to write and kept in contact with his friends and colleagues in the film industry. In 2019 Tyrel entered his script “After Dawn” in to The ReelHeART screenwriting competition and received a semi-finalist award for his work. With an opportunity in 2020 to return to Vancouver, Tyrel jumped at the chance to return to the city and continue a career in the film industry. In the early months of 2020 Tyrel started a small business as a Military advisor for film. He continued to write and two of his short films “Memories” and “Knock Knock” were filmed, one in Vancouver and one in Toronto. Currently he is developing two continuing series for television, short films and feature length scripts with producers and directors in Vancouver, Toronto and Los Angeles. Early 2021, Tyrel wrote and made his directorial debut with Betsy.

Director Statement

I wrote Betsy after my retirement from the Military. Through out my life I have experienced the effects of suicide. From friends and co-workers, I've encountered many situations where some one in my life has either committed suicide or has struggled with it. Betsy came to me after a close friend and I had many discussions about the struggles of mental health and I decided to write about it. I then started to create and moved to filming the short that I have a strong connection with and that many can relate to. Shot in one day with crew of 6. No actors were harmed in the filming of Betsy and all stunts were rehearsed and performed with the supervision of a fight choreographer.
