Director Biography - José Luis Zorrero

A los 19 años, José Luis se muda a la ciudad de Nueva York para estudiar en Broadway Dance Center con sueños de convertirse en un actor de teatro musical. Obsesionado con teatro, tap y repostería, empezó a aplicar todo lo aprendido al cine. A los 23 se muda a la Ciudad de México para realizar su primer cortometraje ¡Beso de lengua! Actualmente tiene más proyectos de ficción en desarrollo.

At age 19, José Luis moved to New York City to study at Broadway Dance Center with high hopes of becoming a musical theater actor. Obsessed with theater, story, tap and baking, he started to delve and apply everything he learned from theater into stories and film. At 23 he moved to Mexico City to produce his first short film ¡Beso de lengua! He currently has more fiction film projects developing.

Director Statement

¡Beso de lengua! narra la historia de un romance emocionante y poco común entre dos chicos, Itzcóatl y Moisés, ya que este es un retrato de mi “cita ideal” en primer lugar. ¡Beso de lengua! explora las dinámicas de poder, la idea de “feminidad” y “masculinidad”, implementando lugares sociales “terceros” y muchísimos postres y pasteles.

Esta película tiene muchos elementos surrealistas y experimentales que van desde el diseño de producción hasta el tono general de la película; también tuvimos la increíble oportunidad de filmarla en película de 16 mm, una experiencia que atesoraré para siempre.

Como alguien que idealiza a sus parejas y el romance, anhela recibir flores en el día de San Valentín pero nunca ha experimentado el amor romántico, esta película es un reflejo sincero de alguien que desea la conexión humana.

¡Beso de lengua! tells the story of an exciting and unusual romance between two boys Itzcóatl and Moisés as this is a portrait of my “ideal” first date. ¡Beso de lengua! explores power dynamics, the idea of “femininity” and “masculinity”, implementing “third” social hangout places and a lot of desserts and pastries.

This film has a lot of surrealist and experimental elements ranging from the production design as well as the overall tone of the film-we also had the incredible opportunity to shoot this in 16mm film, an experience I will cherish forever.

As someone that romanticizes partners and romance, longs for flowers on valentine’s day but has never experienced romantic love, this film is a sincere reflection of someone who desires human connection.
