Clayton Scott is a writer/director based out of Kansas City, Missouri. Clayton grew up on a farm in the smallest county in the state of Missouri. His passion for cinema began in high school and continued into college where he studied filmmaking. He is currently an editor in the advertising industry. Below the Fold is his directorial debut.
I wrote Below the Fold because I wanted to make a film with a uniquely Midwestern story. Skidmore, Missouri—the small town where Susie Potter goes missing—is a real place with a population of less than 300 people.
There have been many tragedies in this town; the most notable of which was the murder of Ken Rex McElroy, the town bully. McElroy was shot in front of 60 eyewitnesses, and yet the case remains unsolved. Then there was the mysterious disappearance of Branson Perry, who went missing nearly 20 years ago. I grew up seeing billboards of Branson’s face, and as the years went on, the image faded. This image haunted me and inspired me to tell my own fictional story of a missing person.
Shooting Below the Fold on location in Skidmore, layered the film with an unmistakable sense of place and foreboding that the actors and crew members were able to tap into during production. It’s a feeling that seeped into the performances, the cinematography, the sound design, and virtually every other aspect of the movie—and it's one that I hope lingers in the minds of audiences long after the credits roll.
