Director Statement

Bella is an experimental short film that integrates multiple genres of time-based media into a cohesive cinematic work. Reminiscent of a Maya Deren film, the narrative is driven by visuals, sound, and pace with figurative, landscape, and objects functioning as signifiers to provide meaning. This unique work uses a mashup of techniques seen in commercial music videos, video art, travel vlogs, screen dance, and traditional cinema to weave a spiritual and psychological journey of a young fairytale-like dancer. The protagonist moves thru a myriad of epic landscapes — labyrinths, sand dunes, mesas, vistas, forests. Both Co-creators Seth D. Myers and Sarah Stolar use their own life experiences as the root of their visual investigations. They have remixed and reworked reoccurring themes of trauma, childhood, fairytales, sexuality, gender dynamics, and internal dialogue in their individual and collaborative work. Bella is a visual and conceptual experience that challenges viewers from both an emotional and psychological perspective.
