Experiencing Interruptions?

Behind Of Tobacco

This documentary tells the story of tobacco farmers in rural Indonesia, who are behind one of the country's largest commodities. Despite tobacco being a major source of national income, the lives of these farmers are often far from prosperous. Through an intimate lens, the film reveals the harsh realities of the tobacco fields, where farmers struggle to meet their daily needs, cope with unpredictable weather, fluctuating market prices, and the pressure from big industry.

Director Statement

In Indonesia, tobacco is one of the main contributors to the country's revenue. However, behind this contribution lies a reality that remains largely unknown: have the tobacco farmers themselves truly experienced the benefits of their hard work? Are they able to meet their daily needs? I chose this theme because of a personal connection; not only am I a smoker, but I also live near a town known as the "tobacco town."

Through the emotional journey of this documentary, I hope to invite the audience to open their eyes, to feel sympathy and empathy, to understand the confusion and relentless struggle of the farmers who work tirelessly for their families.

Visually, I employ a black-and-white approach, symbolizing emptiness and sadness, combined with static shots that enhance the mood and message I wish to convey. Using music with a sad, melancholic, and reflective tone to create a deep and emotional atmosphere, allowing the listener to experience the beauty in sadness or reflect on deeper feelings.
