Before The Third Bell
Abhishek Majumdar has emerged as a leading playwright and theatre director in
India over the last decade. His plays are urgently political yet universal in scope.
Before The Third Bell explores how he and his collaborating artists worked to create a
new production, Muktidham. The camera follows the director, actors and designers
for four months, from the early stages of rehearsal to opening night, to capture the
creative processes and thinking that led to the staging of the play.

Although theatre thrives in India, films on the processes, people working in theatre are rare to come by. This has also meant that young people who are looking to understand theatre or work in theatre, have no references or archival material to look at. Hence, I felt the need to make this film, especially when we have a new wave of theatre making in India with artists such as Abhishek Majumdar.
