Yifei “Yash” Zhang(b. 1999) is a filmmaker and theatre performer from Tengzhou, China. He is currently pursuing a Creative Documentary MFA at University College London(UCL). He received a B.A. from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee, for an interdisciplinary degree he created that combined theatre with film and media studies. He earned a degree from the New York Film Academy's 6-week filmmaking workshops in 2019.In 2020, he was studying abroad in Kathmandu, Nepal with SIT: Development, Gender, and Social Change in the Himalaya program.
Informed by his training from performance theory and theatre directions, Yash spends a lot of time exploring connections between performance and moving images, to draw attentions to the subjectivity of different mediums. He is interested in experimenting improvisation in his film works and embracing spontaneity of performance, which often blurs the boundary between fiction and non-fiction. Yash’s work is heavily influenced by feminism, post-humanism, futurism and pan-spirtuality.
His films were presented at multiple film festivals and exhibitions including Mao International Film Week, Indie Memphis Film Festival, Lang Moving Image, International Short Film Festival Canton, etc.
