Lucinda Coleman is an Adjunct Lecturer (Research) and sessional Lecturer in Performance at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), Edith Cowan University. She was the founding Dance Maker of the Australian performing arts collective, Remnant Dance, 2010-2020, during which she produced, directed, and choreographed various and diverse productions globally. Her artistic works have included dance films and site-specific dance works, as well as short and full-length contemporary dance theatre pieces performed in dance industry, education and community contexts throughout Australia, and within Vietnam, China, and Myanmar. Dr Coleman was awarded a grant by WAAPA and the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Edith Cowan University to create an artistic work to celebrate the '2020 International Year of the Nurse and Midwife'.
The contemporary dance film, 'Becoming', features six dancers performing a series of duos and solos in different locations, accompanied by original, devised soundscape. The dance film integrates choreography, movement composition (use of body, time, space, dynamics) with cinematic conventions to create a hybrid dance form for the screen. The work has been delicately shaped by the reflections of experienced Registered Nurses/ Registered Midwives living in Australia; the recorded words have determined the form of dance and provided the basis for the film’s soundscape. The intention was to create an interdisciplinary piece which playfully challenged stereotypes of nurses through authentic storytelling and reflexive account. 'Becoming' was commissioned by the School of Nursing and Midwifery and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Edith Cowan University, Western Australia and funded by Edith Cowan Commissions for the ‘2020 International Year of the Nurse and Midwife’.
