Beauty and the BEAST

The class assignment was to find a fairy tale and update it to make it relatable to a college audience. We also had to keep at least 5 elements from the origin story. The class selected Beauty and the Beast.
We went with the risks college women take when going out alone. Belle succumbs to the affects of a date rape drug dropped into her drink when she attends a house party without her friends.
In an effort to make the story progress in a short period of time, we made the Beast a stereotypical Hollywood version of a frat boy.
Chip makes an appearance in one scene and the frenetic house party dance scene is reminiscent of the villagers with pitchforks coming for the Beast. Belle is attired in her signature yellow and is temporarily tramped by the Beast. We did not want Belle to have someone rescue her, we wanted her to find her own safety and be the heroine of her own story. She awakes at the end, knowing she was the one who saved herself.
