Huang Keyan, born in Nanjing, China, has always been fascinated by art and storytelling from a young age. Starting at the age of two, she began exploring Chinese painting and later delved into various art forms such as oil painting, sketching, and mosaics. At 22, she obtained a Bachelor's degree in Set Design (Spatial Design) from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, Italy. Following that, she pursued a Master of Film and Screen Arts program at the University of Sydney in Australia. Currently, Huang Keyan primarily focuses on film scripting, directing, and production design.
In the realm of moving images, Huang Keyan has embarked on numerous ventures. Her earliest endeavour was a short film called "Serendipity," which she animated using Adobe Photoshop. Keyan first encountered the world of film production, was during a class with Professor Moneta Fernada, leading her to direct her first narrative film, "Dark Corner." After collaborating with friends working in the photography industry on multiple short films, she made the decision to systematically study film and create her own works.
Huang Keyan's work primarily is drama films, where she leverages visual storytelling to expose human nature and reflect contemporary social phenomena. She believes that this is the true purpose of cinema, and she passionately embraces this mission in her films.
The theme of Beauty In The Lens is the trade-offs between professional demands and personal passion.
Nowadays, models in advertisements are no longer thin and flawless but instead embrace their facial blemishes and imperfections, which has become a new trend of showcasing confidence. However, in order to cater to this popular style, many photographers have abandoned their original artistic styles. Is this good for those photographers themselves?
Alex's story reflects the struggles of many artists who must navigate the tension between commercial demands and personal expression. By juxtaposing the vibrant colours of Alex's photographs with the financial and emotional struggles he faces, we aim to create a visually striking and emotionally resonant experience for the audience. Through this film, we hope to inspire viewers to reflect on their own artistic pursuits, the importance of staying true to oneself, and the profound impact of unwavering support from loved ones.
