Two Special Victims police detectives, one Korean American and the other African American, probe the disappearance of a young Chinese American child in San Francisco's Chinatown in 1991. Backdropped by the Rodney King beating and murder of Latasha Harlins, the volatile relationship between the two officers come at odds with their ability to be objective in the search for the girl as well as the officers' personal lives. The investigation is closed ambiguously after a violent incident and the surfacing of a dead body a couple months in. Ten years later, in 2001, a Guatemalan American journalist with a crime beat at the San Francisco Chronicle investigates the disappearance herself and finds the girl, alive and well, living in China.
