THE STORY OF THE FILM 'THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS'

More than fifty years after the release of the film "The Battle of Algiers" in theaters in June 1966, the director Salim Aggar found at the end of a search which lasted more than a year and a half, the actors, extras and technicians who worked on the film directed by Gillo Pentecorvo and produced by Yacef Saadi.
In this documentary full of anecdotes and stories about the shooting of the film, the director found the actress who played the role of Hassiba Ben Bouali, the young actress of 17 years who played the bride of Bouhamidi but especially some figures important parts of the film that were barely 10 years old at the time of filming and that no one will recognize today.
Beyond the film's important historical component, the documentary focused primarily on the social, cinematographic and cultural aspect of the film and its impact on a generation that had just regained independence.

Director Biography - Salim Aggar

Salim AGGAR is an Algerian journalist, film critic, producer and director of documentaries. He is the author and director of four documentaries: “It turns in Algiers” (2007) which shows the difficulties of Algerian filmmakers during the period of terrorism, “Words of a French prisoner of the ALN” (2010, selected for the PriMed 2010 - the Festival de la Méditerranée en images) on the testimony of a French prisoner of the Algerian war, “Le moudjahid de la plume” (2013) on the career of the dean of the Algerian press Nouredine Nait Mazi, and “Chahine, Algeria and Cinema” (2017) on the relations between the famous Egyptian filmmaker and Algeria.
In December 2018, Salim AGGAR was appointed director of the Algerian Cinémathèque.
