After working in the commercial world Mandalina decided to follow her passion and become a filmmaker. Attending the highly respected NZ School of Broadcasting, she completed a Bachelor of Broadcasting Communications. She then entered the film/television industry, as a production intern.
In 1995, she received funding from Creative New Zealand for a short film called ‘Repeated Moment’ which she wrote, directed and produced.
Since completing her short film, Mandalina remained in the industry. Continuing to work in production, experiencing a number of local and foreign productions. Never losing sight of her next short film. Mandalina used any free time creating new ideas and enhancing her writing skills.
Mandalina is also an installation artist. She has created thought provoking art installations for charities. They are always erected in a public domains and free to the public.
Creating art to bring a greater understanding in our communities is dear to Mandalina's heart. This makes Mandalina an empathic filmmaker who is full of passion, telling stories about people and their struggles in today’s society.
Growing up, Mandalina had a very close relationship with her grandparents. This bond, lead to a natural affinity with the elderly.
Mandalina first had the idea for 'Bass Line' in 2006. At that time, she was living next to noisy neighbours in an urban environment. She combined this element with a story she had heard at work. It was how a grandfather had to leave his granddaughter's 21st. The grandfather had been a war veteran and the bass line in the music reminded him of bombings during the war.
Mandalina has personally invested in the the production of Bass Line. She has had the full support from the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services' Association. After the festival run she hopes to show the short film at RSAs around New Zealand, the RSL clubs in Australia and in the British Legion clubs in the United Kingdom. It was a story she wanted to share with others to create greater understanding in the community.
