Director Biography - Chenhan Yao

As a child born in a medical family, Lin Zhao did not choose the same medical career as her father and grandmother but chose to seek the value of her life in the film industry.
Lin grew up with animated movies, from the Barbie series to the many characters in Japanese anime, and she often imagined herself as a member of the movies, experiencing a different life together with the animated characters. She firmly believes that film, animation, and other types of moving images are the ways that human beings offer themselves to experience infinite experiences in a limited life, and she is fascinated by them.
During her undergraduate studies at Monash University, she had her first contact with the world of film and television, learning about the development of film and television, basic theories of film, scriptwriting, camera use, and other basic content during her 3 years of study. During this period, she also tried to create a web game about smiling depression, a short story script for detective and crime-solving, and a documentary film about the current situation of international students in Melbourne (in 2019). Although Lin had a basic knowledge of the film industry, the overly written and theoretical content of her studies made her uncertain about her future development. She was not satisfied with the written word, so she decided to come to the University of Sydney for a more technical and in-depth study.
During her studying of moving images, she had the opportunity to try out different roles during production and created many short films with like-minded people on a variety of topics. For example, she worked as a producer in Barking and Bodhi, as a director in Hairpin, and as a post-producer in Oasis, etc. All these filming processes made Lin more deeply appreciate how work is born, the responsibilities and difficulties that different functions require, and strengthened her determination to continue to work on this path. She may not be a mature and good filmmaker now, but in the future, she will be.
