Bakmiracle starts with this question:
"Why can't we choose our family?"
I used to think that being born into a rich family, things would be easier, but after all, it was just wishful thinking, that ends up leading me to another question for this film:
"What would happen if we were allowed to choose the family that we want?"
I wanted this film to not just be a typical family-drama, but to have a new fresh perspective in this genre by giving a little fantasy element. Growing up in a Chinese cultural background, made me want to include the tradition of eating noodles as a symbol of getting a long fortune, like the long and unbroken noodle shape.
The experience I'm most trying to communicate with Bakmiracle is acceptance. Although at every stage of our lives, we may have our regrets, life goes on. We grow and maybe finally be allowed to look deeper and understand that everything has a reason. The main character in this film, Latief, has a similar experience. One of the things I felt strongly about in the making of Bakmiracle is that I wanted this film to have its own magical language. I understand that the problems Latief thinks he is facing are unavoidable. The only thing that can solve it is miracle, but a miracle only happens when you accept it.
