Sam Coale grew up in Providence, Rhode Island. At age five his father introduced him to such films as ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’ and ‘Jaws.’ Watching films, Sam became fascinated by the illusion of filmmaking: allowing a shot’s composition to do the storytelling and provide the audience a unique experience. Sam would start working with a camera in earnest around age 10 (his father's) and by age 14 would be making his own shorts. Upon graduating Wheeler High School in Providence, Sam would make his trek to Chapman University in Orange County, CA to study Film and Liberal Arts. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Writing and Directing. Sam would find trouble connecting to the California landscape and cultivating creative inspiration, as he was still connected to his New England roots. Sam's journey would ultimately require him to explore new areas he had come to be surrounded by: The Redwoods, the San Joaquin Valley, the grid-like jungle of LA, and the high desert- as well as areas more akin to his roots, like Scotland. This balancing act between home and the unknown would manifest in Sam's first attempt to make a film called, ‘The Suzanne Project,' where Sam would end up trying to recapture the fun of his youth making films, but ultimately feel stunted in his growth as a storyteller. Thus, Sam would drive headfirst into industry work as a Production Assistant, Assistant Editor, and Photographer for such companies as Walt Disney and NEXT Entertainment. He worked as production assistant most notably on 'The Bachelor' and Season 6 of 'Scrubs.' Eventually, as fate would have it, Sam would lose his mother to Pancreatic Cancer, when he was 29, and he would return home to be with his father for another 9 years. In this period of Sam’s life, Sam would get deeply involved with the film community in New England, honing his craft by operating on films and producing projects. Eventually Sam would begin his own production company Coaloptix Entertainment LLC, a brand umbrella for which many of Sam’s creative outings would reside: music videos, shorts, and feature films. Sam has recently moved back to LA, feeling it’s the right place to move forward. With two of his own Shorts now heading to festivals, Sam is ready to see what the future brings and explore even more of the unknown.
Movies for me have always been an outlet toward what I call 'The More', i.e. the mystery of what's out there. I have often felt that I am on a search, and movies are literally a visual outlet of my quest. I work out life's mysteries through them. Storytelling comes out of a personal need, it's not a casual choice. At the end of the day it's come down to this: I am happiest when I am devoting my time to telling stories, and I am unhappy when I am not. No matter what level of success I ultimately achieve, it has always ALWAYS felt like time well spent.
