Kiernan Francis is a filmmaker, photographer, stylist, and casting director based in New York City. His work explores the psychological sensations of urban youth and their material manifestations.
In my directorial pursuit, I champion the elevation of interpersonal connection, community, and understanding, central tenets at the core of my cinematic practice. My film is an attempt to immortalize, materialize, and distill the complex experience of coming of age in the twenty-first century. As a director, I am intimately connected to the communities I portray, drawing from my lived experiences to make diverse perspectives both available and relatable to my audience.
My practice and diverse background offers unique perspective that enriches the human experience. Through subjective cinematography, I delve into the romanticism of everyday life, jumping in and out of internal worlds. I emphasize holding onto moments often overlooked and characters pushed to the side, exploring their interiority while navigating their external worlds. My films often center around protagonists who are outsiders on the journey to self-discovery, and I approach subcultures with sensitivity. My background in casting and street scouting allows me to bring authentic and diverse performances to the forefront.
My film seeks to be incredibly immersive, akin to recounting a memory of nights passed with a close friend—jumping timelines and exploring scary specifics. I want the audience to experience the world I create through the lens of relatability, understanding, excitement, and fear, offering a glimpse into the multifaceted experience of living in New York City.
As a director deeply rooted in these communities and lived experiences, I emphasize stylistic overlap and a belief in the power of community. As a representative of Generation Z, I am committed to pushing culture forward and bringing the world closer together.
