Backfired

A frustrated theatre understudy dreams of replacing the insufferable lead actor. But when his chaotic friend conjures up a juvenile plan to launch him into the spotlight, things soon take an explosive turn…

BACKFIRED is a dark comedy drama following a theatre academy rehearsing for an upcoming performance of Macbeth.

As the cast and crew, hailing from diverse socioeconomic
backgrounds, clash over roles, attitudes and power dynamics,
a darkly humorous tale of envy, revenge, and unintended consequences unfolds.
The story touches on themes of power, nepotism and class conflict in the arts, whilst also exploring the cyclical nature of retribution.

Writer Biography - James Nicholas Green

James is an award-winning freelance Director and Writer; independently working within comedy, commercials, short film and music video.

His recent debut comedy drama short film ‘Victory To The Mimers’ is currently in the film festival circuit. So far, it’s gained a shortlist at the Young Director Awards during Cannes Lions, 4 x award longlist nominations at The British Short Film Awards (including “Best British Short Film”), and selections at BAFTA and BIFA qualifying festivals such as Aesthetica, ShortCom and Norwich Film Festival (where it was also nominated for “Best British Film”).

His music videos and commercials have gained nominations at the UKMVAs, Berlin Commercial, Kinsale Sharks, and have won 4 x Promax Awards (with 7 x nominations), also playing at Raindance, Atlanta Film Festival, and London Short Film Festival.

Being from a working class background, James’ films often poke fun at social hierarchy with a satirical wit.

James uses meticulous precision in his visuals (he knew his design degree would come in handy one day) and has a passion for character driven stories; striking a balance between abstract and realism, comedy and drama.

(He also won a medal for Table Tennis aged 13, but didn’t want to brag).
