Following graduation from Exeter University Rica worked as a voice actor, reading traffic reports on the radio before being accepted onto the TV training program ‘MAMA Youth’. She then entered the world of television, working as a runner and researcher on a range of live and factual productions including ‘The Wright Stuff’, ‘The One Show’, and several BBC Science productions, to then working on Sky comedy. More recently she can be found on large features as a Floor Runner in the AD dept.; from the upcoming ‘Dumbo’ film with Director Tim Burton, to Johnny English 3 starring Rowan Atkinson, as well as several independent productions and TV dramas such as Danny Boyle’s ‘Trust’ and BBC America’s ‘Killing Eve’. This is the first short that she has written and directed.
Anyone who has ever felt the gnawing pangs of hunger can identify with the plight of Sasha at the beginning of our story. For Sasha, her goal – to acquire bones and stave off hunger and hardship in her life – becomes an obsession resulting in her taking a very questionable full time delivery job and in her manic collection of hundreds of bones, a fanatical attitude that goes unrecognised as a problem by her, and is used by The Baron as a means of control. But our protagonist and our villain have surprisingly similar traits, for The Baron also has an addictive personality, concerned only with his own form of success, and his desire to become an intrepid, financially successful drug baron with no rivals (still alive).
Ultimately Sasha wins back her bones and her freedom, and so she should. This was always going to be one story where the dog ends up victorious, and definitely does not die. But we also receive a warning in the form of The Baron’s untimely demise. You should not make the mistake of thinking that the acquisition of power and the action of revenge does not come without personal cost. Although sometimes you just step into a peat bog and can’t get out. Some people are just unlucky.
