BIRDS OF PASSAGE

After fleeing Ukraine, brothers Bohdan and Artem work illegally on a small construction site in Brandenburg. Their mother is supposed to join them soon, but they have recently been unable to contact her. While they wait for a message, Bohdan tries to find his feet in their new surroundings. Artem's thoughts, however, linger in the distance. He senses that something has happened.
To take his mind off things, Bohdan persuades Artem to go to a small disco with him and the other workers. On the way back, Bohdan's stoic façade begins to crumble thanks to his excessive alcohol consumption and Artem realises how much his big brother is suffering from the events, even though he tries not to let on. Artem can't sleep that night. He just waits for everything to fall apart. Then, the next morning, a phone call comes and even though Artem doesn't hear what Bohdan is told on the phone, he knows for sure that his mother is dead.
