A British-Egyptian physician and filmmaker, Ayman’s journey spans medicine and storytelling. His cinematic voyage began at the National Film Institute in Cairo, where he studied film direction—an immersion into Egyptian cinema’s soul. Later, European cinema broadened his horizons at Westminster University in the UK. Digital filmmaking captured his imagination, leading to two arthouse feature films: ANAPHYLAXIS and LETTER TO OBAMA, both showcased at international film festivals. Beyond film, Ayman is a versatile writer, with completed screenplays, poetry, and novels crafted in both Arabic and English.
Title: Biosimilar
Director: Ayman Mokhtar
As the director of “Biosimilar”, my intention was to craft an experience that is as visually arresting as it is thought-provoking. Animation, with its boundless potential, allowed me to delve into themes of technology, identity, and the essence of humanity in a way that traditional filmmaking might not.
Concept and Inspiration: The seed for “Biosimilar” was sown from my fascination with the convergence of artificial intelligence and human consciousness. Celeste's odyssey – from her awakening in a hibernation chamber to her relentless quest for self-discovery – mirrors our contemporary grappling with the omnipresence of technology and our own sense of self. In an era where artificial intelligence pervades every aspect of life, I wanted to explore what defines humanity, consciousness, and the quest for meaning beyond our programmed existence.
The visual aesthetic of “Biosimilar” draws inspiration from dystopian aesthetics and visionary futurists. The hibernation chamber, high-tech corridors, programming factory floor, metal shore, and high glass office surrounded by double helix DNA towers were designed to evoke feelings of isolation and estrangement, juxtaposed with moments of awe and wonder. The contrast of a Black & White world with splashes of hot red and Celeste’s coloured warmth accentuates the tension between technology and the organic. The climactic scene on the white mountain, with a fiery peak, invokes the biblical imagery of man’s dialogue with the divine.
Music and sound design play a crucial role in amplifying the emotional resonance of “Biosimilar”. The blending of Carl Orff’s ethereal melodies with pulsating electronic rhythms, mirrors Celeste's internal journey and the external world she navigates. The use of silence and ambient sounds in key moments accentuates the tension and underscores the gravity of Celeste's quest.
Themes: At its core, “Biosimilar” explores the nature of reality and the fine line between simulation and authenticity. Celeste’s confrontation with her creator atop the white mountain poses existential questions about creation, purpose, and autonomy. Her creator's enigmatic responses and the revelation that she is a "glitch" challenges viewers to contemplate their own existence and the unseen forces that shape their lives.
The film also delves into themes of resilience and curiosity, which define the human condition. Celeste’s awakening, her escape from a labyrinthine facility, and her relentless pursuit of answers represent the universal desire for freedom and understanding. “Biosimilar” is more than a science fiction narrative; it is a metaphorical exploration of our innate drive to question, rebel, and transcend our limitations. Additionally, the film subtly addresses feminist themes, with Celeste as the lone female fighting for autonomy in a male-dominated robotic world that refuses to accept her awakening.
Conclusion: Through Celeste’s journey, I hope to inspire audiences to reflect on their paths, challenge their realities, and embrace their individuality. “Biosimilar” celebrates the unyielding human spirit, the quest for self-discovery, and the enduring enigma of our existence. It is a film that seeks to provoke thought, challenge perceptions, and ultimately celebrate the limitless potential within us all.
I am deeply honoured to present “Biosimilar” to you and hope it sparks meaningful conversations and leaves a lasting impression on those who experience it.
Sincerely,
Ayman Mokhtar
