"Bemused" is a story of humanity, born out of extreme brutality, nourished by empathy. A story of hope and despair, it takes the viewer inside the head of a dome (person who dissects corpses for post mortem), stunned and bemused by the sheer brutality through which the corpse in front of him met his end, the corpse of nine-year-old Rakib, killed through insertion of a high-pressure air nozzle in his rectum. Even though Domes are usually desensitizes to brutal scenes due to the nature of their work and intoxication, still he could not handle the sight in front him and the viewer is plunged inside his head, which in utter disarray is desperately trying to find any meaning out of this senseless brutality. This film personifies the mental turmoil of the bewildered and horrified masses bemused by repeated brutality against children in unimaginable forms.

Director Statement

I spent my childhood among marginal people, in the warm embrace of nature, which developed within me a deep passion for storytelling, as I observed the many interesting stories all around.

Afterwards, for my undergraduate studies I attended the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) at Jahangirnagar University (JU) – one of the best universities of Bangladesh, also known as its cultural capital. Here I was exposed to a myriad of diverse ways of thinking from the artistic to the philosophical, to the abstract to the practical. Alongside my regular studies in Business Administration, I was actively associated with the university debate club, media club and photography club. Here, I learned about the evolution of Bengali culture and all its intriguing aspects and components, ultimately helping me to find my true self.

As I toiled away pondering the road I may take – I had a life changing experience in 2011. I attended a two-day seminar by Oscar winning Iranian sound designer – Mohammad Reza Delpak. His words and his passion ignited my own and guided me in finding my path towards knowledge of film and media.I got enrolled in a two-year film directing post graduate diploma program in BCTI. During my studies, I explored more and researched on the insights of film making and media business. Around that time, the Ministry of Information of Bangladesh announced a research fellowship circular to uncover the problems and possibilities of the cinema halls of Bangladesh. I applied and was selected as first research fellow of BCTI and wrote a research-based book, published by the ministry. As I was working on the book, I also co-founded a media company named – KAW and was already working on several film projects.

Now I want to increase my exposure to the experience and wisdom of international and foreign film and media. I plan to practice my craft on a larger scale and contribute, so that the film industry of our country may emerge as a global competitor.
