Ayomide Jasmine Chinemerem Ikenga Eniola (AYO) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work merges ancestral veneration with environmental activism. AYO graduated with a Bachelors of Arts from Amherst College where they pursued a self-designed Interdisciplinary Major which brought together Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Environmental Studies, Black Studies, and Indigenous Studies. They were born in Galway, Ireland and raised in Lagos, Nigeria where they learnt to value the natural world and their ancestral spiritual traditions, specifically from the Yoruba and Igbo tribal lineages. AYO sees art making as a ritual which becomes more powerful in community. Their work contains themes of interspecies relationships and intergenerational connection, reminding viewers of their biological and metaphysical bond with the natural world and their innate responsibility to protect the Earth and all our non-human kin. Ayo is the director, choreographer, and vision keeper behind Symbiotic Futures, an immersive processional performance experience, merging dance with environmental justice activism.
