Avoidable Cut
“The Avoidable Cut” focuses on rising C-section rates in private health sector in India. There is a major disparity between the cesarean rates in private health sectors and public health sectors which indicates a misapplication of the surgery. I came across many causes for the problem while exploring the rural and urban areas. There are systemic as well as societal factors at play. Through the course of researching and interviewing people, I found that midwives play an important role in the delivery process. India has an insufficient staff of properly trained nurses and midwives in private hospitals. Apart from this, doctors argue that the change in lifestyle of urban and rural women, their pain tolerance threshold and the astrological beliefs are also pressing factors for such rates.
Between all the debate and statistics though, the feelings and experiences of mothers get neglected. More often than not, women are scared into taking a cesarean. An experience that should delight them turns into a bad memory.
Having a safe and calm birth is considered a human right but is an Indian woman able to exercise it?
