David Michael Maurer has worked as an Editor in multiple genres, originally starting in Reality TV on shows like American Idol and The Masked Singer. He edited Sterlin Harjo's first dramatic Feature Film "Four Sheets to the Wind" and second "Barking Water" both of which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. He sliced the fan-favorite horror film "Splinter", directed by Toby Wilkins and won the award for Best Editing at the Screamfest Film Festival. Maurer worked with director Matthew Currie Holmes on the Music Feature "Traces" now streaming on TUBI. In scripted television, Maurer worked on Ben Ketai's crime drama "StartUp" where he met "Mendo's Carousel" cast members Edi Gathegi and Otmara Marrero. He also edited on season 2 of "Absentia" starring Stana Katic and most recently, the first two seasons of the rebooted "Fantasy Island" starring Roselyn Sanchez. He became a member of American Cinema Editors in 2013.
Avatari and I have done several videos before P#RN and we wanted to push the boundaries of what we had done before. We both loved the fun of music videos from the late 1990's and early 2000's and so we embraced the bright colors and throwback styles. We also leaned into music performance within the story with a few exceptions. All of it was pre-visualized and costume colors were carefully selected to define character and contrast our standing-set locations. Our tiny crew worked hard to accommodate an aggressive two day shoot in the "influencer stage" and the desert. In addition to Directing/Editing/VFX, I also was the Director of Photography. We filmed on the Canon R5C with some of the fancy lenses that Cinematographer Keith Andreen lent us from the "High Like This" music video. We shot mostly handheld to give the video a more dangerous feeling. The camera whips in all sorts of directions to emulate the transitions done by social media influencers which was carefully planned. The goal is to surprise, delight, and let the audience get lost in our silly mirror world of voyeur and reflection.
