Mae Stroshane is a songwriter and and author of "Measured by the Soul: The Life of Joseph Carey Merrick," aka the "Elephant Man." Her short story, "Autumn Gardening," first appeared in "The Forbidden Stitch: An American Women's Anthology " in 1990. Since that time, "Autumn Gardening" has appeared in over five anthologies and has been used as a teaching tool for students studying the Hiroshima bombing.
Mae has also published a novel, "The Apeman's Tale," and over 40 original songs and piano music. She lives in Boston with her husband.
I wrote "Autumn Gardening" in 1985 when I was pregnant with my first child. The threat of nuclear war was strong, and after hearing a Hiroshima survivor tell of his experiences, I was moved to write this story of Mariko Abe. We must listen to survivors and their message: "Never Again."
