Autism: One Man's Journey
Autism: One Man’s Journey
Filmed, edited, and produced by Scott Michael Klumb
Currently an unprecedented number of autistic young people will be making the transition to adulthood. But what if you are autistic and never diagnosed as a child? What if you are entering adulthood without the benefit of early diagnosis, intervention and support?
Autism: One Man’s Journey is a documentary and memoir about Scott Michael Klumb, a filmmaker diagnosed with autism at age 23. Scott takes viewers on a journey, wanting to bring awareness to the issues related to late diagnosis; and not understanding what was “wrong” with him for most of his life. This is a story of hardship, perseverance, and hope. It is a story of inspiration including Scott’s personal interview with Dr. Temple Grandin, one of the world’s most accomplished and well-known adults with autism.
Scott filmed, edited and produced this inspiring autobiographical film with the hope to reassure late diagnosis autistics that they are not alone, there is support for them too, and that it is possible to connect with people who care. Showing how pushing himself to address challenging situations and emotions, Autism: One Man’s Journey proves that an autistic person can hone their strengths and abilities to create a meaningful life and career. It can be hard, but Scott wants to inspire others and let them know that things do get better. All things are possible.

Scott Klumb is a multi-award-winning autistic filmmaker. He is a storyteller, cinematographer, and editor, knowledgeable in a wide array of film styles, including documentary, where he creates artistic films with meaningful stories to captivate his audience. Based in Boulder, Colorado, Scott has found a passion for filmmaking, pursuing his talent both professionally and in his free time. Scott’s films have been in dozens of film festivals across the world. The notoriety has been encouraging but Scott’s primary focus is to inspire others and to continue his growth as a filmmaker.
Autism: One Man’s Journey is a documentary and memoir of my life as a filmer diagnosed with autism at age 23. Unlike many films that focus on facts and research on children with autism, I wanted to create a film to bring awareness to the often forgotten adults with autism; especially those who weren’t diagnosed until later in life. I also wanted to create a film from a firsthand point of view of autism from an autistic that depicts the very real challenges that late diagnosis adults can face as well as offer hope and inspiration to other autistics and non-autistics, that with perseverance, strength and encouragement from others it is possible to rise above one’s challenges to create a meaningful and full life.
I also wanted to interview Temple Grandin, one of the leading advocates for autism and top 100 most influential women in the world. Her personal encouragement to me and our casual conversation included in my documentary are a side of Temple most people don’t have the privilege to enjoy.
I wanted to make my documentary different from most by bringing in my creativity and incorporating stop motion photography, time-lapses, and my unique perspective into artistry. I also wanted to stay true to my skill set of editing the film to the beat of the music and showcase my creative talents.
It is my hope that the viewer leaves my film inspired by my story and my artistry as a filmmaker.
