Director Statement

One of the amazing things about film is its ability to condense and relate a topic in such a way that allows its audience to take it all in, have a physical, emotional, intellectual and visceral reaction to it like no other art form. The idea of this short film Aunt; is to allow the audience to live through the eyes of our main character Will. Film is not only one of the greatest art forms but also a great tool that connects all art forms. Through the power of audio and image we become vessel participants in a sequence of events constructed to provoke thought and a certain response. In this instance, to have a visceral and emotional experience from the perspective of a kid. Film is a simulation of emotions of sorts that we can hitch a ride with. Wherein we can enjoy and hopefully learn something about ourselves and others all at the same time. It’s tough to know what really makes us US but one thing is sure; we gather knowledge from experience and the behavior of a whole heap of people, all over our social circle, and the line between influence and ignorance is thin. This line can be explored in films in a way that can be precarious in real life. This line is not always clear to us so by communicating on both sides of this line seems pretty damn important for there to be evolution and understanding. The responsibility of films is often mentioned regarding representation and by representing a kids point of view makes the responsibility even more immediate to us as viewers. Including kids as a real part of the film narrative can only help us understand our inner child and empathize with others.
